Our story
The designer behind the Shikanzy brand is not just a creator of fashion but also a curator of cultural experiences. Mohini Gounder, the creative force and visionary behind Shikanzy, breathes life into fabric and embodies unity through art and diversity.
Born in Fiji to third-generation Indian parents with roots tracing back to a small town near Calcutta since 1890, Mohini's upbringing was deeply influenced by Indian heritage and the vibrant Indian/Fijian culture. Under the guidance of her grandmother and mother, she immersed herself in the rich traditions of her unique Indian heritage and Fijian cultures. These early experiences nurtured her love for textiles, patterns, and craftsmanship, leaving a lasting impression.
Mohini's journey led her to Australia in 1991, where she now proudly calls home. Despite pursuing a corporate career and raising a family, her passion for fashion couldn't be contained. Determined to fully explore her creativity and honor her cultural roots, Mohini pursued her dreams, studying fashion design at TAFE Ultimo's Fashion Design Studio and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in 2020.
In 2021, amidst pandemic challenges and border restrictions, Mohini launched her inaugural collection. At Shikanzy, Mohini aims to pave the way for an inclusive, adaptable, and culturally appreciative fashion industry. She invites you to join her on this journey and experience the beauty of her designs that celebrate unity, diversity, and the merging of cultures.
